What you should know: Mulberry is partnering with a large and well-established Portland-based nonprofit that is looking for a mission-driven Head of Finance & Accounting. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of financial processes while supporting strong stewardship of organizational resources.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, this leader will provide financial oversight, operational discipline, and strategic partnership to ensure long-term financial sustainability and compliance across a complex, multi-faceted organization. The role is accountable for maintaining strong internal controls, delivering reliable financial reporting, and supporting effective resource allocation in alignment with the organization’s mission and community impact.
A day in the life:
- Lead the day-to-day operations of the accounting and finance function, setting clear departmental goals aligned with organizational priorities and fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and performance.
- Partner with the CEO and senior leadership team to support the financial health of the organization by developing, implementing, and maintaining effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Lead the annual budgeting and financial planning process in alignment with strategic priorities; support Board approval processes as needed. Oversee monthly close activities, financial reporting cycles, and coordination of annual audit requirements.
- Manage, supervise, and develop Finance and Accounting staff, ensuring strong technical capability, professional growth, and succession development within the function.
- Design and maintain financial reporting systems and dashboards that provide leadership with timely, accurate, and actionable financial information to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting efficiency, and operational performance within the Finance function, ensuring the team is well-resourced to meet organizational needs.
- Analyze financial performance using key metrics, variance analysis, and business intelligence tools to support operational decision-making and organizational planning.
- Utilize risk management and forecasting to support scenario planning, budgeting, financial decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and regulatory financial requirements, including adherence to U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP).
- Prepare and present financial reports and analysis to the CEO, senior leadership team, and Board Finance Committee as required, ensuring clarity and transparency in financial communication.
- Serve as a financial thought partner to leadership by supporting strategic planning discussions, identifying financial and operational risks, and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Conduct ad hoc financial and business analysis as needed, including cost analysis, pricing support, staffing models, contract review, and benchmarking.
- Oversee the external audit process, including coordination with auditors and preparation of required documentation, and ensure strong understanding and application of accounting standards.
Your areas of knowledge and expertise:
- Master’s degree preferred; bachelor’s degree with 10+ years’ progressive leadership in accounting & finance
- CPA license preferred
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
- Demonstrated experience leading accounting/finance teams and developing staff
- Proven ability to implement and improve financial processes, reporting systems, and controls
- Experience supporting organizational planning, budgeting, and operational decision-making
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Energetic, collaborative, adaptable leader with ability to operate in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Each employee must:
- Obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire and renew biannually
- Complete Bloodborne Pathogens and Narcan Training within 30 days of hire and renew annually
Compensation and Benefits: $160-$180K in annual compensation plus competitive benefits package
